Chicago Footnote Referencing - Theology Students

This guide provides information on how to reference using the Chicago Footnote referencing style. PLEASE NOTE: Counselling and Education students should use APA referencing style.

Referencing Books

All references require similar publication information. This is usually found on the title page, verso (back of the title page), and/or cover of the book.

  • Author(s) - note that the formatting of author names differs between the footnote citation and the bibliography.
  • Title - include both the title and subtitle (if relevant), and pay attention to capitalisation.
  • Date - some books provide a specific publication date; otherwise, use the copyright date. This information is usually on the verso.
  • Publisher - this can usually be found in multiple places; if in doubt, check the spine of the book.
  • Place of publication - this is sometimes on the title page, but usually on the verso. Some books, particularly self-published books, do not provide a place of publication.

For examples of different types of books (e.g. multiple authors, edited books), please click through the tabs below.
