In-text reference

Sometimes you may want to use a reference that refers to another source that you don't have access to directly. Here is an example in a block quote.

Hans Asperger noted that:

[T]here is an inability to learn from adults in conventional ways. Instead, the autistic individual needs to create everything out of his own thought and experience. More often than not this results in defective performance, even in the more able autistic individuals (p. 56). (Asperger, 1944, trans. Frith, 1991, cited in Scheuffgen, et al., 2000, p. 89)

The writer who included this block quote in her assignment had access to the Schueffgen (2000) reference but not the translation by Frith (1991), or the original 1944 work by Hans Asperger. The Frith reference was unavailable and the Asperger (1944) reference was in German. Note that the original work by Asperger is listed first, the translation is listed second, then 'cited in' precedes the reference that the writer actually consulted. The page number of the Scheuffgen reference is given last. The Scheuffgen reference had already been cited earlier in the assignment, so et al. was used instead of listing multiple authors.

For Endnote users: The Scheuffgen (2000) reference was inserted as an in-text reference and, in the Word document, the reference was edited (by right-clicking the in-text reference) to add the other two references as a prefix, including the words 'cited in'.
